Homebuyers Still Active During January

Des Moines area homebuyers didn't let cold weather keep them from buying homes in January. More than 500 contracts for new home purchases were written in January, up nearly 20 percent over the previous month. The average sales price of a Des Moines area home was $147,951, which is $20,121 below the December average, according to a report published today by the Des Moines Area Association of REALTORS®.

"Despite the cold and snow we had in January, we have a good number of buyers writing purchase agreements," says Kurt Schade, president of the Des Moines Area Association of REALTORS®. "Continued low interest rates and the stability of the Des Moines area housing market has helped keep buyers confident."

"It's still a great time to buy a home here," Schade adds.

The REALTORS®' report shows that 331 homes were sold in January and there were 5,418 active listings during the month. In January, homes were on the market for an average of 107 days compared to 97 days in December.

In 2008, a total of 8,092 homes sold in the Des Moines area for an average sale price of $168,952 and were on the market for an average of 96 days.
